Bratislava/London, 2 January 2018 - Peter Kažimír has been chosen for the “European Finance Minister of the Year 2018” award by The Banker, a prestigious British monthly magazine, which is part of the Financial Times group. The magazine has thus recognised the work of the Slovak Finance Minister and the results of our economy.

The magazine has commended and recognised the work of the Finance Minister, Peter Kažimír. Since he took up the post of Finance Minister in 2012, the Slovak economy has seen a pronounced revival. The Minister has managed to scrunch down the Slovak budget deficit from 4.3 percent of GDP in 2012 up to the planned 0.83 percent this year, making Slovakia one of the countries with the lowest government deficit.

I’m glad that our accomplishments are being recognised abroad as well. It’s a result of our efforts, but also the fact that we represent an equal partner for others in Europe and that we have proved this position. Of course, the award also represents a commitment to the future,” Peter Kažimír, Minister of Finance, said in response.

The Banker highlighted the growth of the Slovak economy, which stood at 3.3 percent of GDP in 2016 and is expected by the IMF to maintain the same figure in 2017. This year, the economy is expected to grow at a pace of 3.7 percent.

“I believe that our economy will fare well in the future, mostly by virtue of investments in the automotive industry and technological innovations,” Peter Kažimír added.

The decision to award the prize to Kažimír was based on an evaluation by The Banker’s editorial staff as well as a survey given to influential European bankers and economists. In the past, the award has gone to Irish minister, Michael Noonan, and Latvian minister, Dana Reizniece – Ozola.

The Banker has been published since 1926 in more than 180 countries worldwide. Since 1996, it has been published by Financial Times Business. The monthly magazine delivers on a regular basis the most important news concerning retail and corporate banking, information about technological development, product innovations, software development, profiles of individual countries, as well as observations and opinions of world-renowned experts.

The magazine is a respected source of banking information among professionals and the magazine’s rankings represent a recognised benchmark for measuring success.
